UK calls Rivers Election rerun violence a disappointment
The British High Commission has expressed concern over the level of violence recorded at Saturday’s legislative re-run polls in Rivers.
The High Commission, in a statement by its Press and Public Affairs Officer, Mr Joe Abuku, in Abuja on Tuesday, also alleged irregularities in the elections.
“The British High Commission in Nigeria is disappointed by reports of violence, in particular against electoral officials in the elections in Rivers on March 19, 2016.
“UK observers in Rivers saw irregularities around the voting and noted the low turnout of voters at polling units, which was in part, a consequence of fear of violence, “ it said.
It urged the leadership of major political parties in the country to encourage their supporters in the state to obey the electoral laws.
It also called on those still dissatisfied with the outcome of the elections to pursue resolution of their grievances through the courts.
