Senate Committee on media rolls out legislative agenda

The Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs has rolled out its legislative agenda for the 9th Senate as relates to media activities. The Committee which held its inaugural meeting at the National Assembly enlisted a number of activities which it plans to unfold in the cause of the 9th Senate.

The Chairman of the committee, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye explained the roll of the committee as the eyes, ears and mouth piece of the Senate, and also enumerated the media agenda for the 9th Senate as he draws from section 98 of the Senate standing order.

Some of the activities includes; Managing the image and public Relations of the Senate, external publicity and other issues in the mass media concerning the Senate, other matters concerning the media that may be referred to the committee by the Senate Majority Leader, and the annual budget estimate.

In this vain, the Chairman called on the National Assembly Media, its primary stakeholders, to collaborate with the committee in order for it to effectively discharge its mandate. “As the mirror image of the Senate, we cannot accomplish this task alone, but in partnership with our primary stakeholders that is the media. With the corporation of the media we shall successfully discharge our mandate.” He said.

He further stated that the committee was not an agency for information dissemination but one that considers the media as an insider, a stakeholder and a partner in the Democratic enterprise. He however mandated the media to work acidulously with the committee towards repositioning the Senate to its true and proper position, not just before the local public, but as well as the international communities.

The Chairman therefore gave a summary of the work plan of the committee which is to; hold interactive sessions with identified stakeholders, executives of media houses, editors in chief, also to hold dialogue sessions between in- house and media groups which is the Senate Press Corp, among weekly press briefings and meetings as well as coordinating other Senate Committees in reaching out to the public through the media on their jurisdictions and activities.

He added that there will be annual lecture series and other media Public Relations programs, projected towards maintaining a sustainable media trust and understanding of the electorate.
