Reps wants FG to investigate intrusion on Nigeria’s Itongeji Island by Benin Republic

House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to protect citizens at Itongeji Island in Ogun State against the Republic of Benin, as well as establish government’s presence on that island. The House was worried that the government of Benin Republic had raised its flag and stationed various security agencies around the island, including school buildings for its citizens, while Nigerian government had abandoned the economically viable area. It therefore, mandated its committee on Special Duties, and Navy, to undertake an oversight visit to Itongeji Island with a view to recommending ways to secure it in order to protect Nigerian citizens living there, who are facing risk of annexation by neighbouring Benin Republic.
