INEC Chairman speaks on Ekiti, Osun, 2019 elections

Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Mahmoud Yakubu, has promised to ensure free, fair, and credible election in Ekiti, Osun and the 2019 general elections.

He stated this in Abuja on Thursday July 5 at a quarterly meeting with newsmen.

He said the commission has moved out of the age when it reportedly compromised standards and fell short of public expectations.

He appealed to the public to desist from associating the commission with any political party, stressing that it would continue to maintain its impartiality and integrity. “We should stop seeing INEC as political party or its officials as rival candidates,” he said.

Mahmoud said though there were a lot of challenges facing the commission, he had envisaged many of them before taking up appointment as the commission’s boss, and that he return to his classroom as lecturer after leaving office, without tainting his name.

He urged all politicians in the country to be of good conduct and promote level-playing field among their contemporaries.

Yakubu also debunked reports that the commission planned to rig election for a particular party, using his staff and the smart card readers.

He said the smart card readers have been configured in such a way that they can only work on the day of the election between 8am and 5pm, before and after which they can never function.

“The Ekiti governorship election: As you are aware, the election will be conducted in 2195 polling units spread across 177 wards in 16 local government areas. 35 political parties are participating in the election,” he said.

He said the commission had implemented 12 out of the 14 activities listed in the timetable or schedule of the election. The two remaining activities yet to be implemented by the commission are end of campaigns which is scheduled for midnight of Thursday July 12 and the conduct of the election on July 14.
